1999 vintage report for Swan Hill (Victoria)

Colin Free, president of the Mid Murray Wine Grape Growers Association said favourable conditions for bud fertility and the maturing of young vineyards had brought about a 10% increase in yield for the Swan Hill region. Rain during vintage caused splitting on some early varieties and also was conducive to powdery mildew. Excessive heat also affected some red varieties. Colin said the 1999 vintage quality for whites was very good. ‘Sugar levels rose steadily and optimum quality levels were reached,’ he said. ‘Generally reds are very good, but wines are not all as good as the previous vintage.’ He added that vintage was not as rushed as last year’s.
