1999 vintage report for Orange (New South Wales)

Vintage in the Orange region started on 15 March, late for the area. Yields were up 15% on last year, said Craig Stubbs, secretary of the Orange Region Vignerons Association. Reasons were a very wet winter in 1998 which provided excellent soil moisture. Subsequent warm weather in spring made for a high proportion of buds bursting. Weather during vintage was dry and cool, but rain during March caused botrytis and powdery mildew in many vineyards. The cool season meant some varieties were difficult to ripen. Craig said both reds and whites showed excellent quality where the fruit was ripe and disease-free.
