1999 vintage report for Mudgee (New South Wales)

The Mudgee region experienced good winter and spring rains and a dry, cool growing season. However, heavy rain in mid vintage caused some big problems with botrytis, said Ian MacR’, vice chairman of the Mudgee Wine Grape Growers Association. Yields were average with a lot of new vineyards bearing their first crops. Ian said some fruit was rejected due to powdery mildew and quite a lot for botrytis late in the season. There was low downy mildew pressure. ‘There was some very good Shiraz and excellent Cabernet when not affected by botrytis,’ Ian said. Red quality generally was very good and whites picked before the rain were also very good. ‘Because of the new vineyard production, some wineries were overloaded,’ Ian said. There were considerable losses due to botrytis in some, mostly new, vineyards. ‘Some poor quality wine was made from rotten fruit, but in spite of the problems, this could be a great vintage for Mudgee,’ Ian said.
