1999 vintage report for Cowra (New South Wales)

In Cowra, new plantings came on line this year and yield for the area nearly doubled from last year, to 12,500 tonnes. Mark Sims, president of the Cowra Region Vineyard Association, said it was a normal to slightly later vintage, with red and white varieties ripening together. ‘A wet patch at the end of February and early March had growers concerned for disease and ripening, but a dry spell from this time on saw good to excellent fruit harvested,’ Mark said. ‘There was a bit of botrytis on the whites, but reds were unaffected.’ He said reds were good to excellent from fruit harvested in ideal cool night/warm sunny day conditions. Yields were higher than last year due to a wet spring. He described the 1999 whites as ‘good flavours, at lower Baumes than normal. A short wet period had botrytis concerns, but overall growers are happy with quality.’
