1999 vintage report for Canberra (NSW/ACT)

Frost in late October 1998 curtailed what looked to be a good season and caused a decrease in yield — up to 70% in some vineyards, said David Madew, president of the Canberra District Vignerons Association. Another aspect of the weather which caused problems was rain at the wrong time, which increased disease pressure, particularly powdery mildew. Vintage started in mid March; however some wineries processed sparkling base from out of district at the beginning of March. David said the overall quality of reds was good, although lighter than those of 1998. ‘Quality of whites is also good, for those who had a crop and avoided disease,’ he said. Because of the frost, a smaller than expected vintage put no undue pressure on most wineries’ facilities.
