1998 vintage report for Macedon Ranges (Victoria)

The Macedon Ranges region recorded a 50% increase in yield, as a result of good weather during the flowering period and a lack of early frost damage. Spokesperson Keith Brien said the quality of both reds and whites in 1998 was the best in the region since 1988. ‘There was very little poor weather during the extended harvest across all varieties, that is March until June,’ Keith said. ‘1998 was the driest year in recorded history up to vintage.’ Vintage started early on 22 March, for base wine. Keith said many wineries suffered space problems for the largest harvest on record. ‘Crop levels varied considerably but those vineyards with balanced crop levels produced the best quality wines in many years – -and perhaps the best red wines ever,’ he said.
