1998 vintage report for Granite Belt (Queensland)

After an initial setback when hail in early October affected the yield by up to 40%, conditions improved and Granite Belt producers are generally happy with the 1998 vintage. There was little disease reported, apart from a bit of botrytis in the white varieties. Spokesperson Sam Costanzo said vintage started about two weeks earlier than last year and the longer ripening period with hot days and cool nights favoured the red varieties, which were of generally good quality. Semillon and Chardonnay were also of very good quality. Sam said growers were showing confidence in the region – about 120 ha of new plantings were going in this year, with a similar amount planned for next year.
