1997 vintage report for Diamond Valley (Victoria)

‘Highest quality fruit’ was reported by William Christophersen, secretary of the Diamond Valley Viticultural Association. Vintage started on 21 March, which was later than usual. The 1997 yield decreased by 40-50%, due to cold and cloudy conditions at bud differentiation period and cold, windy and wet weather during flowering. This led to low bunch counts and tiny bunches. However, weather during vintage was ‘magnificent,’ said William, leading to zero disease. Smaller canopies with excellent exposure of branches gave high quality fruit. William said the 1997 reds would be ‘at the highest level.’ Some cool climate Shiraz attained 14% alcohol and Pinot Noir wines will be excellent. ‘The whites also showed excellent quality at low crop levels, especially Chardonnay. All points considered, it has been a top year for quality,’ he said.
