‘One of the best vintages in the last decade’ was the verdict from Bill Moularadellis of the Riverland Winemakers’ Association. He said yields were average to above average in most varieties. ‘As well, new plantings over the last few years are now starting to bear increased tonnages of premium varietal grapes, significantly improving total fruit availability,’ he said. Climate during vintage was cool to mild, with no interruption to harvest and no significant disease problems. The cool maturation period resulted in exceptional colour and flavour development, and Bill said this would be reflected in the red wines. In the whites, maximum Baumes were widely reached, resulting in excellent flavour development.
