1996 vintage report for Riverina (New South Wales)

David Hammond, chairman of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area Winemakers’ Association, said it had been an ideal vintage, with a 30% increase in yield on premium varieties, thanks to ideal growing conditions from flowering to harvesting. ‘This compensated for early frost damage,’ he said. Cooler conditions prevailed right through vintage, with very low disease incidence. Cooler ripening conditions produced fruit of ideal quality. Overall the yield will be 110,000 tonnes, compared with 70,000 tonnes for 1995. David said the quality was excellent. ‘Reds have good fruit flavour and very good colour. Whites from high Baume fruit have good fruit flavour and true varietal characters.’
