1996 vintage report for Pemberton (Western Australia)

Producers in the Pemberton Wine Region consider 1996 will be a high quality vintage, according to regional association president Philip May. He reports an increase of 20% on mature vine averages and 50% on overall regional production. This is due to a significant increase in bearing area and high bud fruitfulness encouraged by the sunny growing season. ‘We have another good vintage producing above-average yields of very good quality grapes,’ said Philip. ‘Reds show good colour and flavour intensity. They are well-balanced, tightly structured wines and should have good cellaring potential.’ Philip said the whites were richly-flavoured and well structured, showing excellent varietal definition in Chardonnay, Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
