1996 vintage report for Murray Valley (South Australia)

A 20% increase in yield in the Murray Valley Region has been reported by Grieg Greenwood, executive officer of the Wine Grape Industry Development Committee. The crop was the largest since 1989, with production estimated to be 250,000 tonnes, 40,000 tonnes higher than the original forecast. Grieg said the yield increase was achieved after a good growing season in the spring of 1995, and a cool mild summer. Climate was fine and cool during vintage, which started on 1 February, about normal for the area. Reds from the vintage should be of good quality, as fruit reached optimum Baume and held good acid. White varieties were slow to ripen with low sugar on some varieties. Chardonnay quality was excellent, although it was processed late.
