1996 vintage report for Mudgee (New South Wales)

‘The best vintage all round since 1991,’ enthused Robert Paul of the Mudgee Winegrape Growers’ Association. He expects an increase in yield by 10 to 15% and very good to excellent quality. Robert said vintage started (early) on 8 February. Good rain in December/January had been followed by cool to mild and dry conditions during vintage. There was some early mildew problem, but this was generally controlled. High sugar levels, deep colour and good texture will be a feature of the reds, while whites show rich palate weight in Chardonnays and fresh, crisp, good balance in other varieties. ‘Typical Mudgee flavours-an excellent all round vintage,’ said Robert Paul.
