2001 vintage report for Langhorne Creek (South Australia)

Langhorne Creek picked its largest vintage ever, said Lucy Roberts, secretary of the Langhorne Creek Wine Industry Council. The yield of both reds and whites was up significantly on the poor vintage yields of the previous season, with yields up 20-30% on the norm. Lucy said much of the increased production in 2001 was due to new plantings coming into production for the first time. Vintage started in mid February (Sparkling). Picking of reds started early in March and the bulk of red fruit was picked in late March/early April. The ability to pick and process fruit was tested during the season especially in the peak of the red pick in early April. Weather during vintage was mild and dry with no signs of disease. Fruit showed good flavours with low natural acidity. Lucy said the 2001 quality for reds was very good with some excellent fruit being picked. There appears to be some variability in some of the early wines made. She said the 2001 vintage quality for whites was ‘Exceptional û a stand out vintage.’
