2001 vintage report for Shoalhaven (New South Wales)

Very heavy rain and hot and humid conditions during the harvest period in the Shoalhaven region caused rot, mildew and splitting in fruit and led to a decrease in yield by 30% over last year. Gaynor Sims said the rain was the major factor, with picking having to occur earlier, but quality was extremely good. ‘Most reds were ready at the same time, which created some processing problems, she said. ‘However, overall most people were satisfied with the quality, through selective picking.’ Reds showed lower sugar levels but good fruit quality and soft tannins. Whites were characterised by lower sugar levels and good fruit characters. Gaynor said the first botrytis wine for the area was made at The Silos Estate.
