Overview

This webinar is about mitigation, that is the reduction of carbon footprint of the grape and wine sector. Mitigation in the name of the activity of avoiding the causes of the climate crisis so that it might not eventuate. Mitigation is an ethical more than an economic decision. It is a decision that an industry may take to help guarantee its future, in the same spirit that this decision is currently being taken by countries and states, and by communities and families.

The webinar investigates three components of the decision to mitigate. Firstly, Kieran Hirlam will introduce life-cycle analyses (LCA) and carbon foot printing, to demonstrate that the 750ml glass bottle is a major component of the sector’s carbon footprint. Heena Panchasara will describe how pyrolysis allows the industry to convert vineyard and winery waste streams to energy. Finally, Richard Halstead will discuss how the glass bottle may be replaced by alternative packages, and how wine consumers may react.

Those in the grape and wine sector who are considering a response to the climate crisis beyond adaptation should find encouragement in this webinar to begin contemplating mitigation.

Remember, the glass wine bottle is the elephant in the room.
