Overview

The grapevine trunk diseases Eutypa and Botryosphaeria dieback reduce vineyard productivity and longevity.

Vines are infected through pruning wounds, with fungi colonising the wood, causing dieback and eventual vine death. In the case of Eutypa dieback, stunting and yellowing of shoots and leaves is also observed.

Cultural practices, such as the timing of pruning to avoid rainfall, can reduce the likelihood of infection, and disease control can be achieved preventatively through pruning wound treatment and curatively by remedial surgery.

The latest research results and strategies for management of grapevine trunk diseases will be presented.

These include avoiding larger pruning wounds made to the plant structure, pruning at the appropriate time and applying treatments carefully.

Such an approach considers the future development of the vine and the space allocated to it, controlling branching and making smaller cuts rather than losing control of its growth and having to make multiple cuts to its permanent structure.
