2011 vintage report for Scenic Rim (Queensland)

Supplied by John Mullins
Growing season: Frequent and excessive rain, in particular during December and January, resulted in significant disease pressure in many vineyards in the region. Some monthly falls were up to three times the mean. Many crops were lost in December and January, predominantly to downy mildew due to an inability to get out into vineyards to spray. The mean maximum temperatures were lower than the average, in particular from October to December, due to constant rain and cloud cover. Mean minimum temperatures were around average.
Vintage: The cloud cover and lower temperatures slowed ripening with Baumes struggling to reach 11% and harvest in many vineyards undertaken early due to disease pressure.
Yields and quality: Crop yields were extremely low. In terms of white varieties, some very small quantities of Verdelho were harvested with moderate flavours and good acidity. Some slightly larger quantities of red varieties – Shiraz, Chambourcin and Petit Verdot – were harvested. However, due to low Baumes and moderate flavours, the grapes were used for the making of rosé and port.
