2011 vintage report for Grampians (Victoria)

Supplied by Damien Sheehan, Kym Ludvigsen and Andrea Hart, Grampians Winemakers
Growing season: The growing season was a challenging one with consistent rainfall and humidity from budburst onwards, with a peak rainfall event of approximately 200mm over three days in mid January. Coupled with mild temperatures and calm, cloudy days, vineyards battled powdery and downy mildew throughout the season and botrytis as harvest approached. A well-timed and executed spray program and plenty of canopy management was required in all varieties. A positive aspect of the season was the absence of spring frosts and little or no irrigation required.
Vintage: Harvest was three to four weeks later than recent years and similar in timing to 2005, but the disease pressure in 2011 had no comparison.
Yields and quality: Despite the weather and disease pressure, well-managed vineyards were rewarded with average to above average yields of all varieties and high quality in both reds and whites. There were many exceptional parcels of Shiraz displaying classic pepper, spice and plum at low sugar levels.
