2010 vintage report for Geographe (Western Australia)

Supplied by the Geographe Vignerons’ Association
Growing season: Spring started cool and dry but a wet November had a big influence on vine growth and development. Summer was characterised by a very long, relatively hot, dry period. Virtually no rain fell during ripening. Disease pressure was low with only powdery mildew causing any losses. Whites ripened rapidly and reds followed very closely behind, but the cooler conditions resulted in reds ripening more slowly. Reds needed to be left on the vine to achieve flavour ripeness.
Vintage: Budburst and flowering were a little later than normal but with hot, dry conditions in summer, whites were harvested a little earlier than normal and reds were harvested at much the same time as usual.
Yields and quality: Virtually across the board, yields were high due to higher bunch and berry weights. All varieties yielded well. Despite hot conditions, whites held their condition and had good acids and flavours. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay had especially good flavours. Semillon’s high yields resulted in diluted flavours. Reds ripened rapidly and required hanging to achieve full flavour ripeness. Shiraz colour and flavour look particularly good.
