2002 vintage report for Padthaway (South Australia)

The season began with a mild winter followed by warm weather in September which gave good early growth. Budburst was uneven with many unfruitful shoots. October to December was cool and wet and while saving on irrigations, the weather was not kind for flowering and fruitset.
No frosts of any consequence were experienced during spring. The weather fined up in January but average temperatures were 4–5°C cooler until March. April and May saw above average temperatures.
There were no disease problems due to the abundance of wind during the wet periods and the lack of rain late in the season. The poor set due to adverse weather at flowering and the abundance of unfruitful shoots gave lower yields with the district average probably down 40–50% on last year. Harvest was a little late finishing but completed in fine weather with few hold-ups.
‘Quality has been excellent for both reds and whites due to low yields and a cool summer,’ said Ian Ward, president of the Padthaway Grape Growers Association.
‘Padthaway should produce some very good wines.’
