2002 vintage report for Orange (New South Wales)

Yields were down by 10 to 30% on last year due to spring frosts and, for some varieties, windy conditions at flowering.
But the reduced yield led to more concentrated fruit flavours, according to Margot Sharpe, president of the Orange Region Vignerons Association.
‘Across the board it was an outstanding season for whites,’ said Margot. ‘We had rain at generally opportune times, and the cool days and very cool nights meant a longer than usual growing season. And because of the ideal weather there was little disease pressure.
‘Whites are exceptionally good while reds exhibit outstanding quality on lower yields. It was a wonderful year for Shiraz out of Orange and quality exceeded the normally high expectations, while Cabernet and Merlot also show exceptional fruit quality and balance.’
Rain caused some problems at the beginning of harvest in Orange. It did not continue for long, however, so harvest proceeded under generally ideal conditions. The lower yields meant there was no insurmountable pressure on processing capacity or storage, and labour availability was reasonably well matched with vintage requirements.
