2002 vintage report for New England Tablelands (New South Wales)

The growing season was very close to ideal with only a few extremely hot and windy days causing minor vine stress mid season, according to Richard Clementson, president of the New England Winegrowerrs Association.
He said yields were higher than expected.
‘Notwithstanding these higher cropping levels, the quality of both the fruit and the early wines is once again very high,’ he said. ‘The accent of all the vignerons in the region is to achieve a product of the highest standard and while I have spoken of high cropping levels this season, I qualify that by saying that 10 t/ha is considered to be at the top end.
‘While we are a young region, we are gaining valuable experience as to what works well for us, and as long as we maintain our quality goal, we will provide many very drinkable wines in the years to follow.
‘The area is starting to produce some bulk of fruit after the plantings in the late 1990s. Some varieties are now realising their anticipated suitability in this cool climate region, and other later maturing varieties are still being evaluated. Whites such as Semillon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are performing well and are creating much interest in the flavours that are coming through.’
