2001 vintage report for Yarra Valley (Victoria)

Preliminary Report (March):When this report was written, up to six weeks of picking was still to come from this cool region, which has many micro climates. Beringer Blass Wine Estates winemaker Matt Steel said Sauvignon Blanc looked really good this year, displaying herbaceous, kiwifruit characters, especially from the cooler upper end of the Valley. ‘Both Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are showing their best flavours at lower Baumes this year. Sauvignon Blanc tastes at its peak at 11.5û11.8 ° Baume and Chardonnay at 12 ° Baume,’ he said. Estimated yields are proving to be exact this season, with the exception of a lower than anticipated yield for Pinot Noir. Earlier picked, warmer micro-climate Pinot Noir had good colour and tannin from cold soaking and softness from open-fermenting.
