2001 vintage report for Southern Highlands (New South Wales)

Andrew Stewart from the Southern Highlands Vignerons Association said a long vintage in the region ensured good quality cool climate fruit across the board for reds, with very little disease. Early rain meant that some whites were taken off early, but the majority was disease free and showed good levels. Good spray timing and techniques ensured diseases were kept to a minimum. Andrew said yields had increased by 50% over last year, mainly due to new vineyards having their first crop. ‘The region had its first mechanical harvesting, which was well received,’ he said. ‘In this new area some labour shortages were encountered. With new vineyards coming on line there will be large increases in yield over the next 3-5 years.’
