Some vineyards in the South Burnett region had considerable decreases in yield due to heavy rain during vintage, with losses of up to 75% of Chardonnay and 50% of Shiraz. Resulting botrytis, powdery and downy mildew were generally controlled by spray regimes. Paula Greenwood, secretary of the region’s wine industry association, said there was delayed ripening in red varieties, especially those grown in heavy soils. She said the 2001 reds were showing good flavour and colour and whites also exhibited good flavour, particularly Semillon. The expected vintage in the region is approximately 800 tonnes.
