2001 vintage report for Rutherglen (Victoria)

‘Pleasing results, much improved on the past two years,’ reported Chris Pfeiffer, chairman of the Winemakers of Rutherglen. Vintage started in mid February with three inches (75 mm) of rain and warm, humid conditions, which resulted in pockets of powdery mildew, mainly in Chardonnay, across the district. ‘Thankfully these conditions dissipated to our normal warm days and cool nights, with no humidity for the rest of our varieties,’ said Chris. Whites achieved their expected Baumes with good flavours and length of palate. Reds also arrived at expected Baume levels, some taking longer than others because of the mix of dryland and irrigated fruits. They are showing full fruit with soft flavours. Chris said most fortified wines arrived at their level of ripeness. ‘Muscats had good results with sweetness, Tokays had better results with flavour and sweetness. There are some nice ripe flavours showing in these wines,’ he said.
