2001 vintage report for Lachlan Valley (New South Wales)

Vintage started on 21 February, late by 2-3 weeks for whites, early by 1-2 weeks for Cabernet Sauvignon. John Saleh of the Lachlan Valley Grapegrowers said it was generally a better season, with no frost damage in Chardonnay and little disease pressure, particularly in the reds compared with last year, and yield increased by 25%. Rain delayed the start of vintage. A few showers and 30 mm in March caused no problems for the red varieties, although some Semillon was affected by botrytis. John described the 2001 reds as ‘excellent,’ and said whites were generally good, with some fuller style wines. Rain delayed the white harvest generally, the Chardonnay in particular. Vintage was condensed as the Shiraz was not delayed by the rain which brought the Cabernet Sauvignon forward and probably enhanced its quality. With the exception of a little Semillon no grapes were lost to disease. ‘All grapes were sold at a satisfactory price, though some offers were unacceptably low,’ said John. ‘Generally it was a satisfying vintage for both growers and winemakers.’
