2001 vintage report for Kyneton-Metcalfe (Victoria)

Kyneton Vignerons Association vice president Alan Stevens said the region’s winemakers were looking forward to an exceptional vintage of reds because of the favourable weather pattern over summer and autumn. Yields increased by 10% over the previous year due to warm dry weather with little wind in the December fruitset period. Some rain in early March brought some botrytis which did affect some crops, especially the Pinot Noir, Alan said. The quality of fruit from most vineyards was very good, with a little bunch rot in patches. The quality of white wines would be equal to 2000, with increased volumes. ‘Due to the increased production, some wineries are still (early July) holding red and whites in stainless steel until oak becomes available,’ Alan said.
