2001 vintage report for King Valley (Victoria)

Vintage started on 18 February with sparkling wine varieties, followed by white varieties in early March and reds through to early Mayùthe normal timing for the region. Yields were generally average for most varieties this season, said Richard Carson, president of the King Valley Grapegrowers Association. Some rain during February caused some problems in the vineyards, but in general weather conditions were good throughout the season. The rain caused some botrytis in Riesling, but had no effect on red varieties. A long, dry autumn allowed all the red varietals to reach quite high Baumes. Richard said excellent fruit flavours with good tannin structure was evident in most red wines. ‘Due to the long autumn, colour is not as good as expected, probably due to the above average temperatures after veraison,’ he said. Botrytis pressure caused some problems in whites, but in general quality was above average. Good weather conditions through March and April allowed for steady processing during these months. ‘There was some backlog due to winemaking capacity, but in general the vintage was carried off smoothly,’ Richard said.
