2001 vintage report for Kangaroo Island (South Australia)

Vintage in this very new region began in late February and was up by 30% on last year, due to an excellent berry set, heavy spring rains and the result of a further year of growth on young vines. The total tonnage this vintage was approximately 200 tonnes. Warm sunny days with no rain during vintage meant good quality, smaller berries with good colour. ‘KI always produces excellent quality red winegrapes,’ said Veronica Bates, secretary of the KI Grapegrowers and Winemakers Association She described the 2001 quality for whites as average to good. Most grapes grown on the island are sent to the mainland for processing. There are nine producing vineyards but only three of those process their own grapes to wine.
