2001 vintage report for Hunter Valley (New South Wales)

Preliminary Report (March):Vintage commenced on 15 January in the Hunter Valley, one week earlier than the previous year. Bruce Tyrrell, president of the Hunter Valley Vineyard Association, said yields were approximately the same as in 2000. ‘They would have been 15% higher than this but for the extreme heat in mid to late January,’ Bruce said. Temperatures ranged up to 47 ° on 15 January. Approximately 175 mm of rain fell during the vintage period. The combination of intermittent rain and sunburn caused some fruit to soften and be picked early. Bruce said Semillon was picked during the hotter conditions and showed some higher than normal alcohol and concentrated flavours. ‘Chardonnay had slightly lower than normal sugars but plenty of flavour, freshness and finesse, as in 1993,’ he said. ‘Shiraz is in the finer, more elegant style, with very little over 12.5% alcohol.’
