2001 vintage report for Diamond Valley (Victoria)

While average yields were the norm, odd individual variances occurred, due on one hand to some poor fruitset on Chardonnay and on the other with a few late variety difficulties because of rain, said William Christophersen, executive officer of the Diamond Valley Viticultural Association. The only downside to an excellent vintage was that a few vineyards were affected by late season rain and some instances of powdery mildew where spray programs or canopy management was inadequate. Cabernet Sauvignon was the main variety still not picked at that time. Those vineyards displaying greater control of the ripening process through crop/canopy management had excellent Cabernet. William described the quality for reds as ‘excellent’, with particular reference to Pinot Noir, Merlot and Shiraz, where 24-26¦ Brix had been achieved. ‘There are also some excellent Chardonnays in barrel at this stage,’ William said.
