1999 vintage report for Gippsland (Victoria)

Average yield across the Gippsland region was down by 30-40%. There were several reasons for the drop in yield, including powdery mildew, botrytis and frost. ‘The region is huge in area and consequently conditions vary across the region,’ said Val Friend, a member of the Gippsland Grapegrowers and Winemakers Association. ‘Each grower is relatively small and new growers are coming on board each year. Some grapes and areas were badly damaged by disease while others had no problems at all. The region is steadily maturing and producing some great wines.’ Val said in the main bird problems had been solved with netting. Weather during vintage was excellent, with balmy, dry and sunny days. However, earlier in the year there were many days of drizzly, cloudy and humid weather which produced botrytis and powdery mildew, and frosts burnt off new shoots. Val said although yields were down, all growers were reporting good ripeness and good quality.
