1999 vintage report for Geelong (Victoria)

1999 will be recorded as a vintage for very long-lived whites and reds, said Paul Chambers, president of the Geelong Winegrowers Association. He said excellent warm summer weather produced good colour and sugar levels. There was virtually no rain between February and May. Poor fruitset in Merlot and Chardonnay reduced yields, but other varieties showed average to above average yields. Paul described the whites as full flavoured with good acid balance and excellent ageing potential. Reds showed deep purple/black colours, high sugars and excellent acid balance. ‘There are some excellent dusty Cabernet Sauvignons and Pinot Noirs with excellent colour,’ he said. All varieties could have been harvested at the same time; winery capacity was the limiting factor.
