1998 vintage report for Warren Valley (Western Australia)

Vintage commenced in mid-February, about a week early, in the Warren Valley region. Most varieties showed promise until about mid-March when a lot of early rainfall damaged many of the later varieties. Warren Valley Wine Industry Association President Bob Peruch said unirrigated low-yielding vineyards experienced a near 100% recovery of excellent fruit. Yields were up about 10%, due to better setting on white varieties especially, and also new vineyards coming into production; the total now approaches 4,000 tonnes. Weather during vintage was mild to warm. Bob described the quality of early varieties as ‘very good’ and that of late varieties such as Shiraz and Cabernet as ‘fair’ (because of rain). He said the quality of 1998 Pinot and Merlot is very good, although most Shiraz and Cabernet is ‘ordinary.’ Chardonnay and Verdelho is ‘very good’ and Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc is ‘average.’
