1998 vintage report for Riverina (New South Wales)

Tonnes per hectare were down and litres per tonne were below average in the Riverina region of New South Wales, due to dry/drought conditions during the growing season, and despite irrigation. Andrew Schulz from The Cranswick Estate said that yields decreased about 8%, but the quality overall was very good. Vintage began on 28 January, which is earlier than usual for the region. ‘Reds show above average colour, flavour, structure and sugar levels,’ Andrew said. ‘The 1998 whites have good intensity of fruit flavours and high sugars.’ He said the generally lighter crop led to less potential problems. However, the short, compressed vintage put some pressure on processing.
