1998 vintage report for McLaren Vale (South Australia)

‘1998 is an excellent year for reds — excellent Baume levels and good natural acid have resulted in most red varieties achieving perfect balance,’ said David Dean, general manager of McLaren Vale Winemakers. He said whites ranged from good to excellent. ‘The Semillon was not as good as previous years, but Chardonnay is very good and Sauvignon Blanc is excellent,’ David said. Vintage began early and continued with very good weather. Some rain during vintage did not affect quality or quantity. Yield for the region was up by about 10%, due to new plantings and some re-trellising of existing vines. ‘Production in McLaren Vale continues to grow with many new plantings, mainly reds,’ David said. ‘Boar’s Rock Winery, a new contract crushing facility, will greatly add to the processing capacity in the region.’
