1997 vintage report for Shoalhaven (New South Wales)

A wet January brought botrytis and downy mildew problems to the Shoalhaven region, according to Geoffrey Cole, president of the Grapegrowers and Winemakers Association. He said there was the potential for this vintage to be the best yet, until the rain came. February and March were dry and hot and vintage began on time in mid-February. The weather affected the quality of the fruit, but ‘not much,’ said Geoff. He said some vineyards had a fall in yield, while others reported an increased yield. Reds had been affected only slightly by the weather conditions; overall the quality was all right. The wet January had meant big botrytis problems in the whites.
