1997 vintage report for Riverina (New South Wales)

Early indications were that yields would be up by 10-20%; however hot, dry conditions at the start of vintage had the effect of reducing yields to about average. Andrew Schulz, Viticulturist at The Cranswick Estate, said generally the 1997 vintage could be characterised as being cool during the growing season, very hot during the first few weeks of vintage and cool and dry for the last few weeks. Quality was ‘good to very good.’ ‘Generally reds were very good in colour and ripeness. Whites were excellent, particularly the Chardonnay and Semillon,’ he said. Andrew said there was very little problem with disease; some growers had some powdery mildew early in the growing season.á
