1997 vintage report for Grampians (Victoria)

Andrew McLoughney from Mount Langi Ghiran Winery reports that 1997 was a good year in the Grampians area, with variable crops across the area. Quality ranges from good to very good across varieties. Andrew said the reds were looking particularly promising. Some white ferments were slow in finishing primary fermentation. The area had very good winter rains and rainfall at the start of the season. Some vineyards were hit by an early spring frost which affected some varieties. With the exception of those frost-hit areas, it was a perfect growing season with good set and bunch numbers until a hot spell which stressed the vines and delayed ripening. ‘Those vineyards on top of their irrigation controlled the stress to a reasonable extent,’ Andrew said. He said ripening was delayed significantly to at least a week later than average. Some vineyards reported their latest season ever. Crops were variable across the district with some growers reporting 20% below average yields, while other vineyards were up to 10% above average.
