1996 vintage report for Langhorne Creek (South Australia)

Greg Follett, secretary of the Langhorne Creek Winemakers’ Association, said there had been an overall increase in yields in his region, with Chardonnay up by 30% and Cabernet and Shiraz yields showing an increase of 10%. However, some growers lost 10-30% of Cabernet Sauvignon yield when they were hit by heat in January. As in other regions of South Australia, the climate during vintage was warm and dry early (March), but much cooler in April. ‘The reds of 1996 should be excellent,’ said Greg. ‘Both Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are showing great depth of colour and flavour.’ Greg also expects the region’s whites to be ‘very good’.
