1996 vintage report for Eden Valley (South Australia)

Speaking on behalf of the Eden Valley Winegrowers Association, Paul Bolden, winemaker at Hill-Smith Estate, assesses the Eden Valley vintage as average in terms of yield. Good set followed the winter rains and full dams meant there was plenty of water available for supplementary irrigation. The season was slightly warmer than average, and dry until late March. Fruit was able to ripen to full maturity, providing excellent quality, and disease pressure was low (some botrytis late in the season).

Red wines will be good to very good, with full, ripe flavours and excellent colour. There will be some outstanding Merlots and Cabernets. White wines should be good, with some fine Chardonnays being made.
