Time to apply for the Best of Wine Tourism Awards

The Great Wine Capitals 2021 Best of Wine Tourism Awards are set to celebrate the resilience of the South Australian wine industry during one of the most challenging years in recent times.

Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA) executive director (agriculture, food and wine) Jo Collins said it was remarkable seeing some innovative thinking by wineries to keep engaging with their customers during COVID-19.

“We know it’s been a challenging time for the wine industry during COVID-19, so the program has been adjusted so it’s easier to apply and participate in this year’s awards,” said Collins.

“We are also looking to recognise the resilience of the wine industry during this time.”

Brian Smedley, chief executive of the South Australian Wine Industry Association (SAWIA), said some wineries have shown great ingenuity.

“Despite the difficult circumstances with COVID-19, they have displayed great diversification by setting up virtual tastings, tours and interactive online experiences,” he said.

Collins noted that overall the awards celebrate the best wine tourism experiences on offer.

“These awards place each winner into the spotlight both locally and globally, demonstrating the value of being part of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network,” she said.

“South Australia is home to 680 wineries and 340 cellar doors. Our wine industry is a key contributor to our economy and a drawcard to regional South Australia, in 2018–19, generating $2.3 billion in revenue.”
