Preparing for extreme weather

Following a year which saw numerous record-breaking climate extremes across Australia, this year’s ASVO Viticulture Seminar has never been more relevant.

According to The ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, in 2023 Australia saw: the warmest winter on record in NSW; unseasonably early heat waves in SA; spring bushfires quelched by floods in VIC; and heavy rain followed by severe wind which brought down trees in Tasmania. None of which are ideal conditions for growing grapes.

The 2024 ASVO Viticulture Seminar will focus on managing extreme weather conditions, and will be held in Orange, NSW on 3rd and 4th September and webcast across Australia.

“Last year we saw extreme weather events across every state of Australia,” said ASVO President, Andy Clarke. “Regardless of which region you are in, these events are becoming more common and successful viticulturists need to know how to deal with dry winters, bushfires, flooding rains, spring frost and wind.

“This viticulture seminar will give vineyard owners and managers the latest best practice advice and practical information about how to prepare for and manage their vineyards in extreme weather conditions. We may be subject to the whims of the weather, but that doesn’t mean we can’t prepare for and manage the risks more effectively.

“By coming together in person in Orange, we can discuss the issues that matter and solutions that work specifically for grape growing.”

The 2024 ASVO Viticulture Seminar on managing extreme weather conditions is being held in Orange NSW, and online, on Tuesday 3rd September, as well as a field day of vineyard visits on Wednesday 4th September. It is held in association with the NSW Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development.
