2011 vintage report for Peel (Western Australia)

Supplied by Bernie Worthington, president, Peel Wine Association
Growing season: The Peel region, as with most of south west Western Australia, experienced the hottest summer on record with the lowest summer rainfall recorded. This followed one of the driest winters ever recorded. This resulted in a shortened vintage with little or no disease impact. Budburst and flowering were a little earlier than usual. The lack of rain lessened the flowering of native varieties which resulted in greater-than-usual bird attacks on the ripening fruit.
Vintage: Vintage was between two and three weeks earlier than usual in most areas with the extended heat affecting ripening of some varieties more than others.
Yields and quality: Despite the unusually warm 2011 vintage, the quality of fruit, particularly the reds, was outstanding with exceptional colour and fruit characters evident. Only time will tell but expectations are that red wines produced from the Peel region in 2011 will be outstanding.
