2006 vintage report for Perricoota (Victoria)

The 2006 vintage in Perricoota can be split up into three distinct weather patterns; mild and wet, hot and windy and cool and dry. The season started with a mild and wet spring, which has produced very large canopies. Hot and windy conditions dominated December and January, peaking over New Year where we experienced windy conditions with temperature in the mid forties. The conditions began to moderate during February, while in March and April were cool and relatively dry.
Yields were average in Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon, while a good set in Shiraz, Chardonnay and Merlot resulted yields slightly above average. For blocks with balanced vines the ripening conditions were perfect, with cool nights and daytime temperatures consistently being in the high twenties. However, the cool conditions did cause some problems for a small number of heavy blocks that struggled to ripen. Botrytis was also an issue late in the season for some of the more susceptible red varieties, like Shiraz and Grenache.
