2004 vintage report for King Valley (Victoria)

Following very hot conditions throughout January and early February, cooler conditions followed, and vintage commenced in late February with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay being harvested for sparkling base. The weather pattern settled down in March and April, with moderate temperatures during the day and cool temperatures overnight and, coupled with cloudless days, enhanced colour development. Rainfall was minimal in March and April, and the region recorded one of the driest January-April periods on record. Whites were harvested for table wines in late March to mid April, followed by reds being harvested throughout April to mid May. Apart from a one-week period in early April, when there was a clash of whites and early reds being harvested at the same time, putting pressure on wineries, the grape intake proceeded in an orderly fashion, resulting in wineries having a smooth vintage. Most vineyards recorded yields about 20% above average, mainly due to larger bunch structure with more berries per bunch. However, some vineyards recorded yields close to average, resulting in an overall increase in grape production of about 15% above average. Winemakers are reporting very good examples of Riesling, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, all with strong varietal characters. There are also some fine examples of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with good weight, structure and colour.
