2002 vintage report for Riverina (New South Wales)

‘The best red winegrapes for 30 years’ is how Stuart McGrath-Kerr summed up the 2002 Riverina vintage.
Stuart, who is secretary of the Winemakers of the Riverina Promotion Committee, said the Riverina yield increased by about 30% on last year.
Vintage began on 29 January, which is about normal for the region, and fine and mild weather prevailed. There were no reports of major disease.
Stuart said that a mild growing season and perfect growing conditions led to an exceptionally large white grape crop in the order of 230,000 tonnes.
‘The whites are very good and the reds are the best in 30 years,’ he said.
A downside of the Riverina vintage was that the large crop and protracted vintage led to storage shortages.
