2001 vintage report for New England (New South Wales)

Richard Clementson, president of the New England Winegrowers Association, said the region had experienced unusually hot weather in late January, when temperatures reached the high 30s, followed by 300 mm of rain the next week. This led to a drop in yield of about 40% compared with last year. These conditions also contributed to an increase in botrytis infection. It was fine during the actual harvest and fruit harvested earlier rather than later showed good quality. ‘Apart from the yield decrease through increased disease and some fruit splitting, the quality ended up better than expected,’ said Richard.
